Instructions and Help about Va 21-0538

Good morning, my fellow veterans. Welcome to the Veterans Advice Hub. My name is Bill Kelly, and today I'd like to continue our series of short videos about the VA disability application process and the forms required to submit a claim. The next form is very important, especially if you have dependents such as a spouse or children. The form you need to get your dependents into the system and account for them is the VA Form 21-686c, Declaration of Status of Dependents. You can find all the forms online at va.gov. Simply fill them out online, print them, and send them in. The significance of this form is to identify who your dependents are. There are a few things I discovered through my own process. For instance, when your dependent turns 18, they are no longer considered a dependent unless they are attending college. In that case, the cut-off age is 23. However, if your dependent is using your VA Post-9/11 GI Bill and receives Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH), they are no longer considered a dependent. It's a little wrinkle to keep in mind. The purpose of the VA Form 21-686c, Declaration of Status of Dependents, is simply to identify your dependents and ensure you receive compensation at the dependent rate. I hope you found this video helpful, and again, thank you for your service. Have a great day.
